A New World Record: The Largest Gathering Of People Wearing Swim Caps

We wore swim caps to celebrate the new year

The Guinness world record for the largest gathering of people wearing swim caps was set in July of 2011, in Japan. The number was 546. Well, yesterday, on New Years Day, we crushed that number. That’s right (doing a little dance now) we toppled the former record when 2045 swim-cap-wearing folks stormed the beach beside the pier at Tybee Island. The rest, as they say, is now history.

What kind of people show up on a holiday weekend to break a world record? Probably not the average Joe, or Jane…

Bringing up the rear were…

The horn sounded and we’d done it. A new record was set and…

It was time for the Polar Plunge. The water temperature was a mild 55 degrees, with air temps hovering in the mid-70’s. Not very polar-like, but everyone had a blast.

Even a sergeant from the Massachusetts State Police drove down to take the plunge, in uniform.

Now, as promised…Denene and I wearing our swim caps. Another one for the record books.

Maybe I’ll wear the cap at the next WPA. Who knows?

Congratulations! Looks like Denene is doing well from the surgery. Best wishes for a happy new year.

Congratulations you guys! I’ve been in water that cold and it is a bit nippy. I’m still trying to figure out how Denene did this after just having all that surgery. I can’t imagine walking much less walking on sand and in water. Glad you had fun though.

Hilarious… and a bit crazy, IMHO. I can’t imagine getting into water that cold for any reason other than to escape someone trying to kill me. lol

Congrats on being part of the record of insane people storming the icy waters of the Atlantic!

And I thought my mother was the last person in the world who owned a white swim cap. As a New Yorker whose local Polar Bear Club is at Coney Island (not that I belong!), I think temp in the 70s is nuthin’–but I’ve been in 55 degree water, and its’ pretty nippy. Happy New Year, Lee! Liz

I thought, “2045 people in bathing suits and caps on the beach in January? Will my eyes ever recover from viewing the photos of people suffering from untanned bare skin and/or odd bikini lines?” lolol – I am relieved that bathing caps were accompanied by (mostly) fully clothed bodies. And, cast my vote for you and Dinene to wear the caps at WPA! 😉

That was truly awesome. Congrats on being a part of breaking the record. Although, I will admit, I kept waiting for y’all to find a dead body…oh well…maybe next time. (Sorry, the writer in me. I have to apologize for it all the time…sigh.)
