Weekend Road Trip: Birds Eye View Of San Jose, Ca.

San Jose

The world looks different when seen from the rooftops. Here’s a view of San Jose, Ca. while standing on a downtown rooftop near the airport. Geez…the things I do for a photo…

Just for fun, here’s a little squirrel enjoying the ocean view in Santa Barbara.

Auntieamy – I’m glad you’re enjoying the site. I would have typed a longer, more intricate question, but my “carp”el tunnel wouldn’t allow it.

    Lee,

Amen on the traffic in Boston. Boston traffic puts Houston traffic to shame and I’ve lived in Houston since I was kid (over 25 years). I would rather drive through downtown Houston Christmas Eve than Boston any day of the year. My family, originally from D.C., used to go out to Nantucket every year. Now, it usually just my mother (who also lives in Houston now). I go with her too but that’s because I’ve got a contract job up there during the summer.

    Love your posts!!!!!

    And the question? GROAN!!!!!!!

Bobby – I’m glad you’re finding the site useful.

Sarah – It’s good to see you here. I remember your troubles with the camera. I just thought it was my ugly mug stopping it from working.

I’m sorry your ride-a-long wasn’t a colorful as you’d hoped. Not every day is as goofy as the stories I tell; unfortunately, many of mine were. Here’s a link to a story I wrote for my good friends over at The Lipstick Chronicles about another of my “bad” days. I think you heard it at Crimebake, but in case anyone else wants to read it, it’s called Takin’ Bacon.

Boy those photos of Boston really make me nostalgic for Crimebake. I took tons of photos when I was there (with my friend’s camera) but she couldn’t download them or email them to me for some reason. I’m now writing a short story for Crimebake and really need some photos to inspire me – so yours really helped. And LOVED your story in the national SINC newsletter. Why couldn’t my ridealong have a similar situation?

    (Hi Bobby!)

Great place for the weekend road trip Lee. I lived in Boston for awile myself and loved it. Due to circumstances I had to leave the city, but I go there whenever I can.

By the way, I’ve been finding this site pretty helpful. Thanks again for all the great info.

    Lee, how cod you?!

We flounder around for an answer and all the time it was a whale of a pun. LOL!
Here I thought you were going to say he did it for the halibut.

I have a guess on the fish question. Does it have anything to do with carpe diem? (carp-e diem?)

Okay, time for the answer to the quiz.

The man in the suit is handing out his business cods. He’s from Boston, get it? Ouch…

Don’t forget to stop by tomorrow with your questions for Sergeant John Howsden of the Fremont California Police Department.

Having visited Boston once, I’ll agree with you about the traffic. We were there for a conference and the hotel was in Braintree. Getting into the city was not something we did on our own. To and from the airport was as much as we were willing to do on our own.

Terry – There’s no traffic in the country that’s worse than the this nightmare in Boston.

Unfortunately, I, too, still have some leftover southern accent.

Rhonda – I just gave up on trying to go anywhere. It’s just not worth it. I’m becoming a hermit. However, I will travel to the airport to get out of here.

I think the next time I go into Boston I might take a cue from friends who take the train. Some friends swear by that T station in Riverside. Others just take Amtrak straight into South Station. After all, even though I have driven in NYC (another “EEK”), I prefer taking the train into midtown. So, I don’t know what’s stopping me from taking the train into Boston, as well. Nest time.

I’ll keep this in mind as I take I-95 and the Turnpike from Deerfield Beach to Orlando. I’ve been at SleuthFest, and it’s been a GREAT conference. Guns, poisons, and helpful hints for writers. What more could a person want?

I grew up in LA, learned to drive there. When we moved to Miami, I had no desire to get on the highways with the crazy people they allow to drive in Florida. Eventually, I had to get the Florida license, but I put it off until the last minute (even though I could walk from my apartment to a DMV office.)

Lee — I did say Hi to Dr. Lyle for you. He says hi back. He’s a fantastic speaker (and gotta love the accent).

Boston traffic…EEEKS! Last time I was in Boston was for a dog show, After the show my friend and I were invited to a spaghetti dinner at another friend’s house, but that was clear across town from where we were.
I was glad I wasn’t driving, my friend was. I believe she STILL has fingernail marks on her passenger seat from me. We had to return to near the dog show site to our hotel after dinner…

I’d rather drive the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) near Philly (better known as the Surekill) than drive through Boston.

Carla – Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad you mentioned the wait time on the Duck Tour. And, yes, it’s definitely not something to miss. Unless you like driving in total chaos. Boston traffic is the worst I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been everywhere. L.A. and Seattle are child’s play compared to Boston.

By the way, the “I” was magically changed to “me.”

Oops. That should be “my husband and me”. WordPress doesn’t have a grammar checker, does it?

Do they hand out free fish in Boston like they used to hand out government cheese in NYC?

If I can add my 2 cents on the DuckBoats, make reservations ahead of time. We were in Boston 2 years ago and walked up thinking we could just get tickets and go. Not the case. These things are popular, so get your tickets ahead of time. We were only spending 2 days in town so we missed our chance. Next time…

We loved it there. We had tickets to the Yankees/Sox game, and even though we wore our Yankees gear, the people there were very friendly to us. A Sox fan offered to take a pic of my husband and me in front of the Green Monster, and it’s one of the best pictures of us we have. Fenway is *much* nicer than Yankee Stadium.

About half that here around Hartford. We got about four last night. The blowing snow that I posted about stopped, and now it’s sunny.

  19. Lee Lofland
    Lee Lofland says:

Yeah, it’s snowing here, too. But not as bad as you’re getting it. I’m pretty sick of it. We’ve had over 50 inches this year. How about you?

Nope, not the right answer for the fish guy.

  20. Rhonda Lane
    Rhonda Lane says:

The guy got too many singing bass for Christmas, so he’s presenting them to jaywalkers, sort of like the Harvard Hasty Pudding Club pot?

Thanks for the Boston pics. I’m about three hours west where it’s now snowing horizontally. A Duck Tour should go on my summer to-do list this year. I’ve seen them in various cities (DC has ’em, too) but I’ve always been too busy to set aside the time to do it. Sounds like it would be worth the time.
