Detective Frank J. Lima, Sr., 70

U.S. Department of Defense – Naval Station Newport Police Department

September 26, 2013 – Detective Frank Lima, Sr. was on base when he was struck and killed by a government truck. Detective Lima had served the Naval Station police department for twenty-one years after retiring as a captain from another police agency. He is survived by his five children.

Deputy Sheriff Dustin Hamilton, 24

East Baton Rouge Louisiana Police Department

September 27, 2013 – Deputy Dustin Hamilton was killed in a head-on collision just after he’d completed an overtime assignment.

Deputy Sheriff Billy Kennedy, 38

Upton County Texas Sheriff’s Department

October 2, 2013 – Deputy Billy Kennedy was shot and killed after responding to a disturbance at a local convenience store. He encountered the suspect and at some point the two exchanged gunfire. Despite his mortal injuries, Deputy Kennedy was able to return fire, wounding the suspect.

Deputy Kennedy is survived by his wife and two sons.
