Officer Jonathon Bastock, 47

Stow Ohio Police Department

February 5, 2011 – On January 6, 2011, Officer Jonathan Bastck stopped a vehicle and, while approaching it, slipped and fell on the ice. While at home recovering from injuries to his knee, he passed away as a result of a blood clot that broke free from the injured area.

Officer Bastock is survived by his wife and three children.

Officer Aaron Peru, 26

San Carlos Apache Tribal Police Department

February 13, 2011 – Officer Aaron Peru was killed in an automobile crash when a trailer broke free from an oncoming vehicle and collided with his patrol vehicle. He’d been sworn in as a police officer a mere 30 days before his death. He is survived by his four children and his parents.

Officer Thomas Adams, 24

California Highway Patrol

February 15, 2011 – Officer Thomas Adams was killed when a vehicle crashed head-on into his patrol car.

Captain Daniel Stiles, 46

Uniontown Ohio Police Department

February 15, 2011 – Captain Daniel Stiles, a 20-year veteran, was directing traffic in an intersection when he was struck and killed by a vehicle. The driver of the SUV said she didn’t see him despite the fact he was wearing a reflective vest.

Special Agent Jaime J. Zapata, 32

United States Department of Homeland Security – Immigration and Customs Enforcement

February 15, 2011 – While assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, Agent Jaime Zapata’s armored vehicle was forced off the road by members of a Mexican drug cartel. The cartel members then shot and killed Agent Zapata. He is survived by his parents and four brothers.

Deputy Marshal Derek Hotsinpiller, 24

United States Department of Justice – US Marshals Service

February 16, 2011 – Deputy Marshal Derek Hotsinpiller was shot while serving a search warrant. During the officer’s entry into the residence, the suspect fired a shotgun at the three marshals, killing Deputy Hotsinpiller and wounding his two partners. The suspect was also killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Deputy Hotsinpiller is survived by his brother, also a law enforcement officer.

Sergeant Adam Rosenthal, 39

Delray Beach Florida Police Department

February 17, 2011 – Sergeant Adam Rosenthal was killed when his patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree in the median. He is survived by his four children.
